OUR MISSION: is to utilise solar energy as the ‘enabling technology’ to address the specific needs of remote and poor non-electrified communities, training and equipping communities to micro-manage, design and install their own energisation processes. We aim to bolster policy development to facilitate the rapid expansion of renewable energies in developing, rural economies in South Africa, using a variety of dedicated stakeholders. Through our work, we partner with businesses, academic institutions, non-governmental organisations, industry associations and more, in order to expand the availability of energy on a national level to include rural areas. In so doing, our goal is to bring about social and economic upliftment to rural areas.
South Africa is experiencing an energy crisis, the grid reaches the vast majority of the population, yet the power utilities are faced with issues of illegal connections, cable theft as well as issues with revenue collection. With the introduction of our solar products the communities can receive basic essential power through solar and in turn alleviate the pressure on the grid. With the growth in product knowledge and accessibility the expansion of the solar footprint within the communities will increase. The success of the project will be evident in the increased availability of electricity on the grid and the power utilities increase in revenue in relation to the usage at large.

Our proposed model is to have a central facility in each rural area that manages the maintenance of the DC microgrids. This central facilitation point would be formulated by using an installation versus number of houses ratio.
By business hub, we mean an economic centre in a rural area that is owned by a selected individual or co-op, which will ensure ownership by the community and thus the complete sustainability of the energisation process. This hub will offer a central point for services for all national initiatives, for example, health, education, policing and coordination of rural voting stations.

The components used for Elanga’s solar products have been tested in the field for years they passed the highest tests for quality, safety and reliability. These systems were designed in line with South Africa’s energy and power needs. The electrification of rural areas is now possible on a large scale for the first time on a cost effective basis. We would like to witness and be involved in the provision of sustainable, renewable energy to rural communities for which grid connection is not a viable option.
Every project, intervention and installation is an opportunity for Elanga and its partners to transfer essential skills and knowlege to the communities in question. After a transfer of knowledge and skills has taken place, we would like to see communities participating in these projects and taking ownership of them. Engaging in projects related to poverty alleviation, job creation and the development and improvement of the quality of life and encouraging a lifestyle change in our underprivileged and previously disadvantaged communities.

TO REDUCE ENERGY LOSS AND THE COST IMPLICATIONS THEREOF, ELANGA ENERGY SOLUTIONS RECOMMENDS THE INSTALLATION OF GEYSER BLANKETS AND PEAK DEMAND LOCKOUT TIMERS. THE BLANKETS WOULD SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE HEAT LOSS FROM THE GEYSERS INSIDE THE CHANNELS, WHILE THE TIMERS WOULD PREVENT THE GEYSERS FROM OPERATING DURING PEAK DEMAND PERIODS AS WELL AS PERIODS WHERE HOT WATER IS NOT REQUIRED BY RESIDENTS.
